Definitions

Backlink – Links originating from one website and pointing to another website or web page.

Citations – Are defined as “mentions” of your business name and address on other websites and webpages, even if there is no link back to your website. An example of a citation might be an online directory where your business information is listed, but no backlink exists.

Keywords – Words that are used by search engines to determine the topic of a given web page.

Mobile Advertising – Advertising through mobile devices. This can be advertising on mobile websites or smart phone apps. Typically mobile advertising can be a click to a call, to a mobile page, a video, or song.

Mobile Coupon – A mobile ticket or message that can exchanged for a financial discount on a product or service. Mobile Coupons are used to entice people to opt into SMS campaigns.

Mobile Keyword – The keyword attached to a SMS campaign.

Mobile Website – This is a website that has the ability to be viewed on a cell phone or smart phone. Since mobile phones are small, much less information is typically on them.

Mobile Landing Page – A mobile landing page is a simple mobile web page that is the destination location of mobile advertising or QR code.

MMS – Multimedia Messaging Service. MMS is a descendant of SMS (Short Messaging Service). MMS extends text messaging to include longer text, graphics, photos, audio clips, video clips, or any combination of the above, within certain size limits.

MMS is frequently used to send photos and videos from camera phones to other MMS phones or email accounts. Most camera phones have MMS, but many non-camera phones have it as well.

Opt-in – To agree to receive promotional e-mails when registering on a particular website from the site owner and other companies to whom he or she may rent your e-mail address to. In mobile marketing, the agreement is to receive promotional text messages.

Opt-out – The option whereby consumer must actively chose to prevent Personally Identifiable Information from being used by a particular Web site or shared with third parties. Typically, the consumer is asked to choose to Opt Out to prevent the Host from using his/her information. In e-mail as well as text messaging, an advertiser is barred from sending additional messages to the individual once they opt-out.

Organic Search – Search results in a search engine that are not paid advertisements. The results that come up naturally based on their index position within a search engine. Organic search results are preferred. Website owners want to come up on top for organic searches using keywords their webpages have been optimized for.

Reviews – Consumers are encouraged to share their experience with a business in the form of an online written opinion. A review typically includes a star rating and written opinion.

SEO – Search Engine Optimization. The act of structuring a website so that it does well in organic listings of search engines.

SMS – Simple messaging system (texting to cell phones)

Socialmedia – Refers to the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue.

Spider – Programs written to scour the web automatically for various reasons (to index web pages, for spamming purposes, etc.) aka web robots, web crawlers, bots, internet bots.

URL – Uniform Resource Locator. Or, more commonly, a web address.
